How much did Ryan Merkley play for the San Jose Barracuda last year? Which surprise blueliners saw more icetime than the offense-first San Jose Sharks prospect on the power play?

How about Ivan Chekhovich, who’s left the San Jose Sharks system for the KHL? Did the playmaking winger get a fair shot under Roy Sommer?

Per SPORTLOGiQ, here’s the official ice time for the 2020-21 San Jose Barracuda.

What’s the importance of ice time?

“If you’re going to ask me about value for a player, and I had to pick one statistic, it would be time on ice. Because coaches know to play good players,” ex-Minnesota Wild lead hockey researcher Andrew C. Thomas told Craig Custance in 2019. “So if I’m trying to figure out how likely a player is to get time on ice in the NHL, given they were in the OHL or the Swedish leagues, I would try to start with that.”

This also applies to the AHL: Barracuda usage in 2019-20 shed light on Danil Yurtaykin, Chekhovich, and Jeremy Roy’s struggles — and totally missed on Nikolai Knyzhov.
