San Jose Hockey Now Podcast Going On Hiatus

Effective immediately, the San Jose Hockey Now Podcast is going on indefinite hiatus.
There are irreconcilable differences between the San Jose Hockey Now Podcast and The Hockey Podcast Network’s new payment model.
Because of this new model, which was first instituted in Jan. 2022, San Jose Hockey Now Podcast’s compensation was cut by 62 percent in Q1 2022 from Q4 2021, despite virtually identical download numbers.
This was not an acceptable new normal, so the San Jose Hockey Now Podcast is now a free agent.
The San Jose Hockey Now Podcast debuted in Aug. 2021 and has featured key San Jose Sharks guests like Doug Wilson Jr., Dan Boyle, and Mario Ferraro. The weekly podcast averages 771 downloads an episode.
Special thanks to recently-departed co-host Nick Flohr for all the hard work you put into making the San Jose Hockey Now Podcast a must-listen for San Jose Sharks fans. Nick was my producer and co-host for 39 of 41 episodes. A shout-out to JD Young for stepping into Nick’s shoes for our final two episodes.
The San Jose Hockey Now Podcast will return, in one way or another, and soon. If you have any inquiries, please direct them to shengpeng@gmail.com.
UPDATE: I spoke on Jun. 1 with Stephen Master, co-founder of Amaze Media Labs. Amaze owns THPN. Master explained — and I believe him — that a major THPN sponsor recently ran into some significant financial challenges, which forced THPN to change their payment structure. This sponsor is responsible for the cash pool that the San Jose Hockey Now Podcast and the about 150 or so other network pods (including basketball and football) are compensated with. I do appreciate Master taking the time to spell out some of the difficulties that Amaze and THPN faced on their side, and for hearing out my side.
I’m sorry you’re forced to deal with this disrespect. You deserve to get paid well for your hard work and great content, Sheng.
Thanks, buddy!
Sorry Sheng, hope for your sake and all of ours that you find a worthy partner soon. Losing Nick was a huge blow, he was such a pro and a natural at this medium. JD filled in well on short prep. Losing the podcast would be an enormous loss to us fans, as there isn’t exactly a wide breadth of quality SJ hockey podcasts out there that look at things beyond the lens of a fan that actually have access and sources. Yours stands alone and is worth more $$ to SJ fans than the Athletic, easily. I’ll do my… Read more »
I appreciate the kind words and thanks so much for continuing to sub!
There will be a hole in my Sharks coverage. Sad. I’m glad you’ll continue with the San Jose Hockry Now. I appreciate the content here.
Thanks!
Hope you are able to find a better situation soon, Sheng! You and Nick put out a quality show and deserve fair compensation for what you’re providing to the fans. Hope we can hear from you again soon and glad we’ll still get your perspective from the site.
You’ll hear from me soon, for sure!
We are lucky to have you and people like JD and Nick – in whatever medium you carry on. 🙂 Thank you for all your work.
Thanks, Alex!
This is terrible and disrespectful from the network. Sheng, thanks for your hardwork and excellent podcasts through these episodes, always my fav to listen to weekly. Hope you will find a network that respect your work just like all the fans here respect you.
I appreciate it, man! Thanks man
corporate greed, go figure. glad you took a stand. you’ll find a way and we’ll just have to enjoy you in written form til then.
Yes you will — thanks!
Sheng really sorry to hear this. You’ve been the best voice in the media online for the Sharks over the last few seasons.
I hope you have an opportunity to continue working the beat and wish you the best wishes.
Please reach out via the Sharks Facebook page and other outlets when something new is brewing.
Chris
Hey Chris, I’m still around, it’s just the pod taking a break. Thanks for the kind words!
I’m so sad this happened. You deserve better Sheng!
Thanks, Alicia! The pod will be back!
