Could Ryan Nugent-Hopkins Be Quick Fix for Sharks?

Published

on

Kyle and JD go through the Top-30 free agents and look to see if the San Jose Sharks are in contention to sign any of them. We discuss if Tuukka Rask and Patrick Laine could be in play for the Sharks (6:00), how Ryan Nugent-Hopkins would fix some of the San Jose Sharks’ issues (12:00), plus we talk Dougie Hamilton (15:30) and Jaden Schwartz (18:30) in teal. Then we try and create a trade for Sam Reinhart (20:00) and some other guys who could be decent fits on the cheap (23:00).

Paul Stastny still has it and much cheaper/lower cap hit. RNH is a long term investment. Stastny is a stop gap for our developing pipeline.

they could even get Haula and Stastny for under $6M and sew up their middle 6 centers. Stastny deploys and performs like a 2C (especially on the Sharks). Haula upgrades the 3C position. Gambrell slides into more of a fit at 4C. they could move LC to wing in this scenario.

would have to give Haula more term (3-4 years).

Like we’ve discussed, I think Couture can still play C — but this is a good strategy, regardless. WPG got mileage out of Stastny at wing this year too, gives you a lot of positional flexibility and center depth in a couple strokes. Makes picking the right goalie all the more important though — a Driedger (for example) better be the right choice, because signing Haula/Stastny might force you to go economical on your back-up.

do you know of anyone doing contract projections on goalies?

i just assumed Korenar would back up. but, yeah, not a lot of wiggle room with the cap (incl. Jones b/o i had about 877k left over in my armchair GM sim).

I haven’t seen that yet…I wonder why sites don’t do projections on goalies

I don’t know how reasonable it is, but I think the ideal move to be competitive involves moving Labanc out. That lets you get a $5m center and a $3m center, and still have the goalie replacement. Couture needs to move to wing, because, even though he can still play center, there needs to be a guy who is a top 6 forward who can step in for injuries. The Sharks have plenty of wings that can shift around the lines, but over the last two years, whenever Couture or Hertl went down, Marleau, Gambrell, Thornton, or Goodrow became second… Read more »

I finished listening to the podcast, and if they think you could get Reinhart for Labanc and a midround pick or two, I think that is the move.

Kane-Hertl-Barabanov
Couture-Reinhart-Meier
Leonard-Haula-Balcers
Reedy?-Gambrell-Chmelevski?

And if you want to do something on D, you move Burns, otherwise you fill in with vet depth/stick with what you have.

Reinhart’s gonna be around $7Mx5. i’ve fantasized around acquiring him in the past. does anyone think Sean Monahan is damaged goods (lots of surgeries and decline in scoring last 2 seasons)? might be a guy to go after if CGY is after Reinhart or Eichel. he’s got 2 more years on his deal ($6.375M per). Sharks might facilitate a semi-cap dump and get him at reduced cost in assets. move Labanc and Gambrel+a mid round pick for him? might even be worth swapping our top 10 pick (if it ends up on the low end) for their 13th overall in… Read more »

there’s also the Rangers rumors wanting to get in on JE. that would leave either Ryan Strome or Filip Chytil on the outs. Strome is their current #2C and has another season with a cap hit of $4.5M. Chytil is team controlled RFA playing 3C for them. if they need cap space they’d deal Strome. more likely they’d deal Chytil. i wouldn’t mind the Sharks getting in on Strome. he’s been producing in the 0.85 pace the last 2 seasons. Chytil’s intriguing as well to upgrade our 3C.

I don’t think Reinhart plays a lot of center though? So Couture is more likely to play center, then Reinhart can step in there if somebody is hurt. While Buffalo is probably under gun to trade Reinhart, I’m guessing they can get better than Labanc though? Not that Labanc is a terrible start for an offer for a team under the gun
