Revisiting Grier’s First Season of Trades

Published

on

Mike Grier was very active with his trades in his first season as San Jose Sharks GM. I look back at all of his trades (for roster players) and how they panned out after the first season, starting with the Brent Burns trade to the Carolina Hurricanes. I analyze Steven Lorentz and Eetu Mäkiniemi’s first season in San Jose and why the trade still feels a bit light. Then, I revisit the Luke Kunin (10:00), Adin Hill (13:00), and Jasper Weatherby (15:00) trades, and Grier’s thought process through each one. Finally, I examine Matt Nieto and Ryan Merkley to the Colorado Avalanche trade and how Ryan Merkley was having a better season with the San Jose Barracuda (19:00) and Jaycob Megna to the Seattle Kraken (23:00).

In part 2, I dive into the blockbuster trade of Timo Meier. I analyze all the pieces of the Meier deal and how Shakir Mukhamadullin really rounded into form for the San Jose Barracuda as the season finished up. Then I examine the Henry Thun deal and why San Jose Sharks fans should feel ecstatic about it (13:30), and also, the Mikey Eyssimont saga between the Sharks, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Winnipeg Jets (16:00). Finally, why Mike Grier did Nick Bonino a solid in trading him to the Pittsburgh Penguins (20:00) and how the Sharks might have struck gold with Jacob Peterson (22:30).
