Should This Be the End for Martin Jones?

Kyle and JD go over the weekend that was for the San Jose Sharks. We ponder if this should be the end of Martin Jones’s time as a Shark and what his play is doing to the development of the rest of the team. Then we try to look at the positives, including Erik Karlsson’s improved play (10:00) and John Leonard’s Saturday night (14:30). Then we give our take on the San Jose Sharks’ Reverse Retro jerseys (20:00) and changes we expect for the St. Louis Blues’ game (22:00).

Jones had some great playoff runs for the Sharks. It’s just time to part ways. Face reality and maybe move a few other “stars” aside from Couture and accept the rebuild.

Troy Marseline

The reality is that this team is just flat bad defensively, and they have been for years now. Put whoever you want in net, the results will be the same. Turnovers, poor positioning and breakaway after breakaway and odd man rush after off man rush gets you the results who have seen for 3+ years now. The Sharks fortunately had a good enough offense, and quite a few breaks go their way, 3 years ago to make a playoff run. Their defensive consistency and less talent than the Blues cost them in the end. Their Defense isn’t even inconsistent any… Read more »

Great point about the defense. Both are very problematic. However, a better goalie should do better. It might be the difference between an .880 Save % and a .900%, both bad, but obv you’d take the .900

Jones is a “good” goalie, not “great” .. he is best suited for a strong Defensive team as back-up where he won’t need to make a series of circus saves to keep the team in the game…. he just can’t do that. The Sharks D is borderline hapless… wheels completely fell of Vlasic… Ferraro, Knyzhov, and Simek are good, but are still developing .. Burns is in decline .. EK65 shows flashes of his former brilliance, but is inconsistent and will never get to his “Sens-level” of play.. It is tough to stand in the net under those circumstances, Jones… Read more »

I don’t know if it’s too early or late to buy out M.Jones? But, we’re not going to make the Playoffs, unless there’s some miracle finish, but they should just go w/ Dubnyk & Malnichuk, the rest of the season.

Sheng Peng

I understand why they’ve given Jones so much rope over the years, but I agree it should be about done. But I have no sense that Melnichuk is close to ready. If another stopgap guy like Stalock hits waivers again, Sharks should look into that

timorous me

Yeah, I really hope people don’t put too much pressure or hope on Melnichuk as some sort of savior. He’s a kid who has practically no experience on North American ice. There could be something there–who the hell knows sometimes with goalies, after all–but the last thing we need is for his confidence to get completely wrecked from being rushed to play at this level in front of a highly suspect defense.
