The San Jose Barracuda have COVID problems now.
On Monday, their parent club, the San Jose Sharks, placed Brent Burns in COVID protocol, retroactive to Dec. 17. Yesterday, Tomas Hertl and Jonathan Dahlen made their second trips to COVID protocol in this calendar year. And now, the Barracuda have added Evander Kane, Jasper Weatherby, and Nick Cicek to COVID protocol.
Both Weatherby and Cicek played last night in the Barracuda’s 4-1 road victory over the Colorado Eagles. Weatherby, who started the season with the Sharks, was making his AHL debut. Kane was not scheduled to be on this Barracuda road trip to Loveland, which is still scheduled to conclude tonight.
San Jose Hockey Now is hearing that Evander Kane has COVID symptoms, severity unknown.
Kane declared three weeks ago that he was fully vaccinated. The San Jose Sharks star was suspended by the NHL for 21 games to begin the 2021-22 campaign for an unspecified violation of COVID protocol. Reports are that Kane tried to pass off a fake vaccination card during the summer.
Per current AHL COVID protocol, if Evander Kane is symptomatic, he will need to quarantine for 10 days, meaning his next AHL game won’t be until after the new year.
The well-being of Weatherby and Cicek is unknown. The Mercury News reported that both players are being driven back to San Jose, a 1,300-mile trek.
Both players are vaccinated.
Asymptomatic players can test out of protocol with consecutive negative tests.
